First up, a quick review of War of the Worlds, which I just finished herein: When War of the Worlds is good, it is very, very good... when it is not, it is boring. Too many long sections listing the names of English places, (yes, I get that that was to make it seem real to readers of the time, but once or twice would be enought) which is especially silly considering how stupid sounding most English place names are. Chobham? Really?
I had to struggle through some long stretches, but when Wells is on, the thing is positively haunting... but you probably already knew that. (Did you, however, know that there's a really anti-semitic part? Yay!)
I guess I'll do this one review at a time as I come to them. Overall, this collection is an incredible book with three novels and crapload of short stories, all compiled in one huge volume. What's more, they're all facsimiles of the original magazine pages in which the stories were first published, ridiculously cool drawings and all. This is too long to read as one big book though, so I'll return to it intermittently.
