Magnus, Robot Fighter is so much fun, but in hindsight I may be glad that I started with the third volume, the beginning is pretty crazy, but definitely leans more toward "crazy and ridiculous," without quite as much "awesome." (But still plenty of it.)
Still, the whole idea of showing humanity's over-reliance on machines by way of a seemingly shiny happy 50s and 60s style utopia that is actually a pretty disturbing dystopia, is so genius. Every now and then bits of worldbuilding pop up that leave the reader wondering whether Manning means for them to be seen as good or bad, it can be pretty sly at times, but never so much as to take away from the pure, elemental joys of the series: Man, miniskirt, karate-chopping, robots. Beautiful.
